Trying to make exercise a regular habit is something that we all face and willpower (or lack of it) isn’t necessarily the biggest challenge encountered when trying to form this routine activity.  Creating a new habit is difficult, but the key to success is, the more consistent the action is, the more likely it is to become a habit.  (And, if you view exercise as a chore, then probably the habit isn’t consistent enough yet).

Consistency is Key

Focus on the habit first and the results later.  The typical approach to diet and exercise is to focus on results first, but what counts most in the beginning is establishing a “new normal”—behavioral patterns—that you will stick to; not the results that you can achieve.  In short, the first 6 months are key— it’s more important to not miss workouts than it is to make progress.  And, once you become the type of person who doesn't miss workouts, you can focus on making progress and improving.

So how do you stay inspired while you exercise?  Nobody is a drone who executes each day identically.  Why not try switching up your fitness routine with different forms of exercise?

We tend to be creatures of habit and once we find a program we like, or at least one we can stick to it, doing the same thing for too long can cause boredom, burnout or injury.  Change it.  Alter an aspect of your workout every 4 to 6 weeks.  Try a new cardio exercise such as stairclimbing, different strength moves or take a new class.  As your fitness lifestyle evolves allow your workouts to grow organically.  Our needs and interests change over time so seek out new ways to exercise.

Use Entertainment to Power Workouts

Exercise should be enjoyable.  The combination of exercise and entertainment can add an extra layer of enjoyment to your cardio— entertainment while you exercise enables you to stimulate your mind, which makes your workout seem shorter and more invigorating and, when you’re able to take your mind off of your exercise, you’ll find that you’re able to keep at it for longer (and more frequently).  Intenza’s Entertainment Series consoles offer Intenzacast™ to help push your workouts to another level.  Designed to give gym members a more personal experience, with total choice and control, this function offers seamless streaming of multi—media content between your smart device and the e2 console— what started out as counting the minutes until it’s over could end up as the best part of your day!

More Smart Solutions

Aim for consistency.  The key to making exercise a habit is putting together a chain of successes so start small and build incrementally.

Exercise for something.  When you have a clear purpose you’re more likely to exercise regularly, so have a “why” for your workouts.

Pick an exercise plan that fits with your lifestyle.  Experiment to find the workout that’s best for you.

Create positive associations.  We can reinforce habits by associating them with activities or experiences we enjoy.  So celebrate your successes by accepting that “mistakes” help us to re—frame what we need to be even better #tomorrowtoday and, remember, if you haven't been able to stick to an exercise habit, it's not because you're doing something wrong, it may be that your brain simply needs some re—wiring! #howfitnessshouldfeel
