A Ray of Light.  The Moray Sports Centre

Powered by Intenza cardio, this dynamic new hub, situated in the picturesque town of Moray (North Scotland), brings something to the table that simply cannot be experienced alone from smartphones or apps— community.

"The seven dimensions of wellness— physical, social, spiritual, intellectual, emotional, vocational and environmental wellness— are the backbone of active aging," says the ICAA (International Council on Active Aging) on its website; and they also underpin the breadth of programs and activities offered by the new Moray Sports Centre which opened this July.

Powered by Intenza cardio, this dynamic new hub, situated in the picturesque town of Moray (North Scotland), brings something to the table that simply cannot be experienced alone from smartphones or apps— community. Gyms are the social hotspots that everyone needs and community is what keeps gym members engaged, motivated and coming back for more. And as we live longer and healthier lives, it’s time to change the narrative. There is no deadline on being active and this multi—use facility, for all ages and abilities, has a variety of recreational and cultural opportunities including studios housing fitness and mindfulness classes such as yoga and Tai Chi. And, with access to information about future self—care and health, Moray will provide a valuable way for people to introduce physical exercise into their daily lives with the obvious benefits in health, fitness and wellbeing— the same three pillars embodied in Intenza’s #tomorrowtoday social initiative which raises awareness of “future—self” thinking.

Community—led Design

A very modern building, Moray was designed with lightness in mind. A large translucent box of light, enormous windows flood the centre with light and throughout the facility concrete floors and exposed ceilings give interior spaces an industrial look. Community consultations, forums with key stakeholders and regular steering group meetings ensured that this GBP 12 million, 522,720m² centre was built with inclusiveness in mind and housed within the white structure is an 8 court sports hall, with capacity for 500+ spectators (with changing facilities), a gym with private teaching area and 3 studios (Holistic, Aerobic and Indoor Cycling), treatment rooms, available for hire; meeting rooms, a Sports hub library, café bar area, fully inclusive playpark and Changing Places accessible bathroom— or in other words, something for everyone.

Strength in Numbers

According to ukactive’s 2018 Reimagining Ageing report, taking part in physical activity is one of the most powerful factors that affect wellbeing in older adults. “Many of the more grievous issues associated with old age, such as lack of mobility, illness and muscle weakness can actually come as a result of a lack of fitness," said Muir Gray, chief knowledge officer of the NHS. Therefore, the development of more accessible community facilities— or Wellness Hubs such as the Moray Sports Centre— equipped with the features to offer a holistic and inclusive physical activity experience can have a powerful, positive impact on the health and wellbeing of (g)local communities. The more society adopts increased physical activity into daily life, the greater the opportunity to press the restart button on the process of ageing, and thwart the loss of function that inactivity causes increases. #togetherletsmakeverystepcount #howfitnessshouldfeel
